District- and state-wide assessment programs allow us to evaluate student performance and are used
as some of many measures of success as a district.
Multiple data points allow for us to constantly improve our practices and programs.

New Jersey State Learning Assessments

The state's math, English Language Arts and science assessments are called the “New Jersey Student Learning Assessment,” or NJSLA-Math, NJSLA-ELA, and NJSLA-Science.

In accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:8- 4.1(d), 6A:8-5.1(a) - 6A:8-5.1(h) and federal law under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), all students in grades 3-8 in Rumson will be required to take the English language arts and mathematics NJSLA assessments.  NJSLA-Science is administered to students in grade 5 and grade 8.

The assessments are scored on Levels 1 through 5, with scores in the Levels 4 and 5 range considered meeting or exceeding expectations.

Once score reports are received they are analyzed in our district to identify strengths and areas needing improvement.  It is important to note, however, that the NJSLA student report is a snapshot of performance.  We obtain a fuller picture of your child as a learner through combining these results with data such as district benchmarks and classroom performance.
