Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance: Coordinate district efforts to comply with N.J.A.C. 6A:7 regulations and promote a discrimination-free environment.
Title IX Coordination: Serve as the district's Title IX Coordinator.


Key Duties
An AAO is a member of the professional staff who has responsibility to:

  • Plan Implementation: Oversee the implementation of the district's affirmative action plan to increase minorities.
  • Equity Plan Development: Develop and implement the district's comprehensive equity plan as defined in N.J.A.C. 6A:7.
  • Monitoring and Improvement: Monitor plan implementation and related strategies for improvement.
  • Communication: Maintain communication with staff, students, and the community.
  • Training Coordination: Coordinate and provide mandated in-service training for all certified and non-certified staff.
  • Grievance Management: Have full knowledge of district grievance procedures and employment policies, serving as the point person for grievance procedures.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain confidential records and report data as required.
  • Hiring Oversight: Ensure that the district maintains fair and impartial hiring practices, often participating in interviews.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as deemed necessary.

Grievance Procedure
Step 1: Submit a complaint to the Building Principal/Supervisor.
Step 2: Principal investigates and responds within 10 working days.
Step 3: If unresolved, file a written complaint with the Affirmative Action Officer; response within 30 working days.
Step 4: Appeal to Board within 10 working days of AAO's decision.
Step 5: Board renders decision within 30 calendar days.
Step 6: Dissatisfied parties may file with the Commissioner of Education or NJ Division on Civil Rights.
