District Initiatives and Policy
The Department of Special Services meets the needs of students eligible for special education, related services and programming including, but not limited to: in-class resource, resource center, self-contained classes; extended school year; speech-language, occupational therapy, physical therapy & Behavioral services. In an effort to accomplish equity for all of our learners, the Rumson School District has created clear philosophies, frameworks, and policies within our Special Education Department.

Twice Exceptional Identification Process
Twice Exceptional is a term used to define a child whose intellectual abilities, creativity, and potential for achievement are so outstanding that the child’s needs exceed differentiated general education programming, adversely affects educational performance, and requires specifically designed instruction or support services. Children from all populations (e.g., special education, basic skills, all cultural, racial, and ethnic groups, English Learners, all economic strata, etc.) can be found to possess these abilities, and the Rumson School District has developed a comprehensive identification process and framework to igniting our Twice Exceptional students’ greatest potential.

Restraint and Seclusion
In January 2018, Public Law 2017, Chapter 291 was signed into law, establishing certain requirements for the use of restraint and seclusion with students with disabilities in school districts, educational services commissions (ESCs), and approved private schools for students with disabilities (APSSDs). Dyslexia
The New Jersey Department of Education has compiled a handbook that aims to provide information to educators, students, families, and community members about dyslexia, early literacy development, and the best practices for identification, instruction, and accommodation of students who have reading difficulties. In addition to the NJDOE Dyslexia Handbook, our district has developed a Dyslexia Screening Protocol. Both of these documents are available for your review at the links below:
