    3-5 Identification

A two-phased approach to identification will be utilized for students in Grades 3-5,  based upon multiple measures from within the following categories:

    • Cognitive abilities testing

    • Standardized test scores

    • Ratings pertaining to characteristics of the gifted student (e.g., inventiveness; creativeness; intuitiveness; curiosity)

In order to ensure equity and access, all students in grade 2 will participate in a group-administered cognitive ability test as a universal screening tool in the spring of the grade 2 school year.
The  Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®) assesses students in three skill areas linked to academic success: verbal, nonverbal and quantitative reasoning. The CogAT ®  is not an IQ test; rather, this assessment measures general thinking and problem solving skills that are used in all academic areas and are not taught but develop gradually during a student's educational career.

Students’ overall performance will be evaluated annually; JET program participants must demonstrate a high level of performance in order to continue in the program.

For complete details on the JET identification process and program, please view the recording and slide show of the parent academy presentation " The Gifted and Talented (JET) Identification and Program in Rumson ."
