    6-8 Identification

There are opportunities for all students to self-select competitions throughout the school year based on interest. Enrichment instructors provide information sessions to students outlining the various opportunities available to them, and any requirements [e.g. sign up] to enroll. Students must be in good academic standing, as these enrichment programs take place during the school day, and students will be pulled from their regular class(es) in order to participate. Every attempt is made to ensure that students do not miss the same class repeatedly.

Acceleration in Math and ELA is provided to identified students in grades 6, 7 and 8 via achievement of qualifying scores on  BOE-approved rubrics for acceleration in ELA and math at the end of each academic year. These rubrics are used to screen all students, inclusive of those students receiving special education services, students with 504 plans, those in I&RS, and English language learners using multiple measures.

In our continued effort to provide an inclusive program, while the rubrics are applied at the end of the school year for placement in the subsequent year, it is possible that during the course of the school year, teachers may find students have grown in gifted behavior based on class performance and observation and may be ready for acceleration.  In these instances teachers are encouraged to reach out to administration.

In order to be admitted to enrichment ELA and/or accelerated math beginning in grade 6, students in grade 5 must meet minimum requirements as outlined in placement rubrics for Grades 5-6 ELA and Grades 5-6 Math .

To remain or be admitted into enrichment ELA and/or accelerated math courses, students in grade 6 or grade 7 must meet minimum requirements as outlined in placement rubrics for Grades 7-8 ELA and Grades 7-8 Math .
